Our layering skincare guide

26th January 2017

It is just as important to layer your skincare this season as it is to layer your clothing. A lot of people will look past this useful tip and feel that their current skincare routine is enough to protect them from the elements. For some this may well be the case but if you aren’t a creature of habit and the products you use are randomly applied, you could potentially be opening up your skin to damage from drops in temperature, indoor heating and other elements such as wind and rain. The ordering of each layer is also very important and will usually run from the lightest consistency through to the heaviest.

Here at Temple Spa, we are dedicated to providing you with the very best products for all skin types but also believe in offering our expert advice so you can achieve the best results from your skincare regime. That’s why we have put together our 4 step guide to layering this season and the products we recommend. If this is something you currently do, then that’s great but for those of you who simply apply a little moisturiser before closing the front door, we suggest you read on...

Step 1 - Cleanse

We should all be giving our faces and necks a good cleanse every single day. Whether you lather up in the shower or splash your face from the sink, giving your face and neck a good wash is the best way to kick start the layering process. This helps to get rid of any dirt build up, leftover make-up as well as oil and sweat from the night before. One of our favourites is WAY TO GO, a cooling and refreshing rinse-off gel that will flush out oily pores leaving skin squeaky clean without feeling taut. Apply a couple of pumps into your palm, lather over your face and neck and then wash off with clean water. It is quick and easy to use, but gentle enough to not strip the protective layers of the skin.

Step 2 - Tone

Applying a toner once you have cleansed is a great way to refresh the skin and to remove embedded debris and final traces of the cleanser used in Step 1. Toning is also considered an important layer as it helps to balance your skin's pH levels and eliminate chlorines and minerals sometimes found in tap water. We recommend using our TONING ESSENCE which can be applied simply by spritzing all over the face for a few seconds or using a cotton wool pad for application around the face and neck.

Step 3 - Treat

Applying a toner once you have cleansed is a great way to refresh the skin and to remove embedded debris and final traces of the cleanser used in Step 1. Toning is also considered an important layer as it helps to balance your skin's pH levels and eliminate chlorines and minerals sometimes found in tap water. Step 4 - Eye cream (optional)

Once you have cleansed, toned and treated, now is the time to begin applying a slightly heavier product and for some of you, you may choose an eye cream before moisturising. An eye cream should be applied before a moisturiser because the skin around the eye is more delicate than the rest of the face. Eye creams therefore tend to have a lighter texture compared to moisturisers and Eye Truffle, one of our recommended products, has a rich crème texture that melts into skin. Its formula is designed to help brighten, firm, improve skin density and deeply penetrate the dermal layer where wrinkles originate. This gives you a feel-good glow and battles against fine lines and dark circles.

Step 5 - Moisturise

The final and another important step in our skincare layering guide is the moisturiser. Your skin moves and stretches whenever you do and if your skin becomes dry, it can become damaged and begin to crack. Moisturising the skin helps prevent this from happening and will help lock in all of that goodness you have applied during steps 1-4. We recommend using a moisturiser that best suits your skin type but we also suggest using one that has an SPF included within the formula. This will help protect your skin from sun damage and we know you’ll be sat there saying “but it’s winter, it’s cold” but the sun can still cause damage to your skin even though the temperature is not as high as during the summer months.
