It grows in high altitudes in alpine ranges in extreme climate conditions and is a member of the sunflower or daisy family Asteraceae. Its scientific name, Leontopodium alpinum, means Lion’s paw and Edelweiss stems from the German Edel meaning noble and weiss meaning white.
