Edelweiss

If you are a fan of The Sound Of Music you will be familiar with Edelweiss from the song of the same title. It should come as no surprise to learn that it is the national flowers of Austria and Switzerland. It grows in high altitudes in alpine ranges in extreme climate conditions and is a member of the sunflower or daisy family Asteraceae. Its scientific name, Leontopodium alpinum, means Lion’s paw and Edelweiss stems from the German Edel meaning noble and weiss meaning white.
